Federal JWOD Celebration Activities

National Disability Employment Awareness Month provides a perfect opportunity for Federal personnel to recognize Javits-Wagner-O'Day (JWOD) Program employees and nonprofit agency staff for their outstanding work and support, but it is not the only time you can highlight your support for the JWOD Program. Many of these activities serve as good examples of how to educate your colleagues and other Federal agency personnel year-round about JWOD Program capabilities that meet their procurement needs.

Federal customers can show their support for the JWOD Program in many ways, including those suggested below. For further assistance in planning a JWOD celebration activity, contact your JWOD contractor and/or other local JWOD-participating nonprofit agency, visit www.jwod.org, or contact the JWOD Program at jwodworks@jwod.gov.

  • Issue an announcement from your Secretary that recognizes the JWOD Program and National Disability Employment Awareness Month. A Secretary's Announcement expresses your high-level support for the JWOD Program to many Federal employees. A sample Secretary's Announcement is provided in this kit; examples of announcements issued by other agencies can be found on the Committee's Web site, www.jwod.gov.

  • Assist the Director or Commanding Officer in issuing a Memorandum of Support for the JWOD Program, recognizing the Program's value, reinforcing the agency's commitment to the Program, and informing Federal personnel of their responsibility to shop JWOD first. A sample Memorandum of Support is provided in this kit; examples of memoranda issued by other agencies can be found on the Committee's Web site, www.jwod.gov.

  • Hold a National Disability Employment Awareness Month event that celebrates or features the JWOD Program. JWOD resources, including videos, literature and speakers, are all available free of charge. Contact jwodworks@jwod.gov for more information. Offer Continuing Education Units to acquisition professionals who attend.

  • Host a JWOD Vendor Fair or exhibit to showcase JWOD product and service capabilities. Invite your JWOD contractors and/or other local JWOD-participating nonprofit agencies to attend and exhibit. Contact the JWOD Program at jwodworks@jwod.gov for assistance.

  • Plan a "JWOD Appreciation Day" for your JWOD service crew (e.g., janitorial staff at Federal buildings, food service staff at military mess halls, administrative support services staff, etc.) Have your Secretary, Procurement Executive, Program Director or Commanding Officer present outstanding JWOD employees and participating nonprofits with certificates or other awards.

  • Schedule a tour of a nearby JWOD-participating nonprofit agency for your agency's decision-makers and/or purchasing staff.

  • Offer JWOD training for purchase cardholders and acquisition professionals (training kits are available from the JWOD Program) or arrange time for purchase cardholders and acquisition professionals to visit the Federal Acquisition Institute's Online University (www.faionline.com) to complete JWOD training for Continuing Education Units at their desks. Federal customers can also learn more about the JWOD Program in the Defense Acquisition University's (DAU) online Acquisition 101 course. Visit www.dau.mil for more information. Training materials and instructors are also available from JWOD Program personnel--visit www.jwod.gov to download materials or contact jwodworks@jwod.gov to make arrangements for on-site training.

  • Contact your Public Affairs Office to see if they would be interested in writing an article for your agency or base news outlet about the JWOD Program and how purchases made by local Federal customers serve its important mission.

  • Link your Web site to the JWOD Web site, www.jwod.gov, and/or design a page of your own listing ways your agency can support the JWOD Program.

  • Hang posters and decorate bulletin boards with JWOD Program information.
